2017 Knights Bridge Pont de Chevalier Chardonnay
2017 started off with record setting rainfall which pushed the growing season to a later start. In early April skies began to clear and the season began to look up with good cluster counts in our estate vineyard and the harvest window moved into a more typical range. As the last weekend of August gave way to September, heat made its way into Knights Valley. The next two weeks produced higher temperatures which allowed our Chardonnay grapes to finish ripening and develop complex flavors.
Fruit from blocks 2A and 8 was hand-picked in the early morning hours of September 16. The grapes were gently pressed and settled, then racked to 50% new and 50% neutral (2 and 3-year old) French oak barrels for cool fermentation. After primary fermentation, the wine remained in barrel 12 months on fine lees once malolactic fermentation completed, with gentle bi-weekly stirring to emphasize fruit and nuance.
Pont de Chevalier is a wine of great energy. The entry elevates the delicate aromas of Chardonnay—citrus, chamomile and linden flower—above the underlying notes of fresh croissant pastry. The palate is delineated and refined with textural elements that echo gorgeous flavors of white peach, Meyer lemon, and white fig, finishing with a distinctive mineral element.
The perfect introduction to a fine meal shared with friends and family, try with oysters in champagne mignardises or salmon rillettes. The wine’s freshness and vibrancy make it versatile enough to pair with casual fare such as Vietnamese pork spring rolls or buttermilk coated fried chicken.
