A Wet, Cool Spring

A Wet, Cool Spring

We've experienced a relatively cool spring this year with an abundance of rain. Currently in the vineyard we are "suckering" (removing excess vegetative growth) and "shoot thinning" (removing shoots that are underdeveloped). We do this so that each and every vine maintains its balance.

We should be seeing bloom in the next few weeks - a beautiful, yet very sensitive time for the young cluster. It's a critical stage for the fruit, but it's also an invigorating time to be in the vineyard. After the shorter, colder days of winter, it's a pleasure to experience the longer, warmer days of spring. We still have to keep a close eye on the weather, however, because high wind and frost remain a concern.
